Every Moment’s New … by Alice B. Clagett ..

Dear Ones,

At a kirtan (sacred music) concert not long ago, Krishna Das (1) said (and I paraphrase): Listen to the kirtan. Just listen. Every time you find your mind has wandered – and there will be hundreds of these moments – just bring it back again. As you do this practice, little by little, slowly but inevitably, the mind begins to calm down.

Well, I couldn’t figure it out. Not at all. Then today I was walking in the country, and I started listening to the sounds around me – the soughing of the wind in the junipers and pines. The caw of a raven, and the scissors-slicing sound as its wings cut through the air. The crunch my shoes made on the gravel. The sound of the wind as it swooshed past the rim of my hat. The trill of a songbird. And then I’d hear these sounds again, in no set order. Sometimes two at a time, one louder than the other. And then I heard a thought – and remembered Krishna Das’ advice, and, and brought my attention back to the sounds around me.

So for an hour I walked, listening to the sounds of nature, and then I’d hear a thought, and then I’d think: Each moment’s new! And the thought would stop, and I could hear the song of the wind again. Right cool! Quite cool!

I did a youtube search – it seems there are not many grownups who listen to the wind blow. All I could find was Sesame Street (2)

Most likely I haven’t explained it all that well…. It’s as if the sound of the wind, the call of the raven, and the crunch of the gravel followed me back to my apartment, and are hanging out here, like old friends.

In love, light and joy,
I Am of the Stars
